Mascot of the Olympics and the most endangered species in Canada is the Vancouver Island Marmot. Recently reduced to a population of 25 by extensive logging and destruction of habitat, this evolutionary wonder, which became a distinct species while cut off by glaciation from the rest of North America, is springing back with the help of the Marmot Recovery Foundation, which has supported captive-breeding centers that raise Vancouver marmots for release into the wild. Help their efforts by joining the Adopt-a-Marmot Club for only $10 a month, and learn more about the story of marmot recovery in “Last Stand,” an article about the species’ plight that appeared in Audubon.
